Te Oro

On a splendid morning 3 classes from Glen Brae School got the opportunity to visit and hand craft things at Te Oro. 2 lovely classes went first in one bus because if the other class had come at the same time then there would be traffic in the building, and so that class had to be patient until it was their turn to go.

As soon as we arrived at our destination we got put into three groups so there wouldn't be a lot of fuss. As we got put into groups the hosts there were preparing to welcome us in or in other words to do a powhiri. Shortly after that we had to take off our shoes as we entered that space of the building to show respect as if it was a marae.The wahine(women/girls)) had to be in the front as we got welcomed in and the tangata(men/boys) at the back. 

When that was done we got the chance to sit down on a mat facing towards our instructors. All the hosts introduced themselves to us students and what activities they would be doing with us. As I had a glance of the creations around me my eyes lit up just like a bright light bulb because all the carvings, harakeke(flax) creations and more, were superb. Later, everyone went to one activity and made use of their time to make their establishment, as one group was doing a little carving out of clay the other two groups were decorating their own rock and working hard to make whetu’s(stars) to represent the matariki stars.

My group and I were making whetu’s, in our little group we had to introduce ourself by saying our name, where were from and what's our favourite food. When everyone had a turn we split up so boys with one host and the girls with another, the first attempt on making the whetu was really challenging but on the second attempt it wasn't as difficult. As we were going through the steps everyone got stuck at some point but that's why you have classmates by your side to help you when you're struggling. We got to make three whetu’s but always give your first creation away just like when you're fishing always throw your first fish away.

Not everyone got to switch to another activity because there was not enough time. But everyone enjoyed their time while it lasted. Before we left we had different people from different groups to have the confidence to talk about what they have did and learnt from it, while the rest of that group stood at the back, then we had one person from our school to give a big thank on the behalf of Glen Brae School for what they have done for us. We sang a waiata(song) and also did a dance and sang a song with the whole class that the hosts had taught us.

Last but not least when we were leaving we had seen the other class who didn't get their turn, arrive at the Te Oro. Also I would really consider watching a video on how to make a whetu if you are interested and to teach your family and friends how to make it as well. :)

Fay and Joe Gock were a passionate couple who were horticulture. With both of their intelligent minds they invented using under-earth heating to grow kumara year-round, putting stickers on certain fruit along with growing seedless watermelons, and were actually the first to do so. 

The couple got credited for saving the kumara because in the 1950’s when black rot threatened to wipe out the kumara industry the Gocks with no hesitation  gifted their disease-resistant strain to the nation, and declined to take any money for it. Unfortunately the Gocks were permitted to own land or build a house due to their government restrictions on Chinese immigrants. 

“As a kid I still remember living in what we called ‘the old house’, it wasn’t dirt floors or anything it was made comfortable ''- words from Jayne Gock(Their beloved daughter). 

While growing their fruits and vegetables, just like any other person they did go through many problems in their gardens but still managed to pull through. They also didn't have much money to pay people to help with their problems that they had but still didn't give up.

Joe and Fay Gock invented many amazing things, they have also taught us a lesson to never give up even when you are really struggling, because at the end you will feel successful and be successful.

Why I think the women's black rugby team

In my opinion I think that women's black ferns national rugby team should get paid the same amount as the professional men's rugby team because they all work hard and work as a team just like everyone else and I just think that is unexceptable.

Not long ago, there was a gorgeous girl who was a shoemaker. Making shoes runed in the family. She felt a bit desolate because she was alone for 21 years. She wanted a man that would care for her no matter what, be honest and also have a great attitude. Her mother miserably passed away, her father passed on in war when she was 8. So her dog kept her company until she found someone.

When I started this term, this day seemed far away. Now it's here and I cant believe that time has passed so quickly, but through your encouragement and guidance, I feel I am ready for tomorrow's challenges. Your a very special teacher and to me you’re number one.

Mindfulness writing

My nose was glued on this distinctive smell that made me want to go and search what it was. While I was trying to find that delightful smell there were beautiful elephants colours of grey, black and white, there were also dolphins colors of blue and white. My hands went smoothly through the light blue water as I was looking around. As Soon as I turned left I saw the distinctive thing. It was my favorite burger. A quarter pounder.

• I also learnt that the part inside the helmet is called the styrofoam.

• The stickers inside the helmet tells all the people that  the helmet has been tested .

• And the sting down the bottom is called the straps to keep our head safe and it has to be tight so it can stay on your head.

• I learnt to always get on your bike and off on the left side.
• When you are on the road or anywhere on your bike to always check behind you to see if cars are coming.
• I also learnt to signal  with my hand so the cars know where I am going.
• I also learnt to press on the side of the tire to see if he tyre is pumped right or flat.

Sun hats

Sun hats. Sun hats are very important to us human beings.
Sun hats come in different colours and sizes but what
were looking for is hat does sun hats do? I am going
to announce my reasons why we should wear sun hats.

My first reason is, They protect our face and some of our
body from getting burnt. Sun hats are very important
because if you stay in the sun too long then you can get
skin cancer. If you get skin cancer you will end up with
brownish patches on your skin sometimes with a rough
scale surface.

My second reason is, They can make you have more fun with
friends and family. Sun hats can help you because when it's
too hot you really want to play with your friends but you
want to sit in the shade because you are burning. That's
why you should wear sun hats so you can enjoy the fun.

My third reason is, You should especially wear a sun hat
in summer. It is very important for you to wear a sun hat
because it is the most hottest season of them all. You could
wear sunscreen but the sun could still get you so I prefer
to wear a hat.

My last but not lest reason is, hich hat you should wear.
I prefer you to wear at least a 2-3 inch brim hat because
it protects all around.

For all my reasons I've informed you about I hope
I persuaded you to wear a sun hat.

Kapa haka festival

On the 24 Nov five students from my class room 8 was performing in Ruapotaka marae. Other schools were there also to perform. They performed to represent our school and also to represent their culture.

Hip hop dance lesson 2.

Today my class and I went to the hall to do our second lesson with our coach Izzy. While we were dancing the music lit up in my ears and it was making me very dizzy and exhausted. First we had to do fitness to get us ready for the lesson. We did very exciting and tiring things in our lesson which made me very confident to participate in. I really enjoyed our second lesson for hip hop with our coach Izzy.

Stavros Kyriakides made these sculptures out of driftwood and also rock. There was no glue, nails, wire or concrete to make his sculptures hold together. He made his sculptures in Wellington in the south coast. His work was distinctive because he made his sculptures only out of natural materials. People have different opinions like, liking things such as art and many other things.  

Food for thought 31 July

On the 31 July a lady called Adele from heart foundation came to room 8 to talk to us about our healthiness. She was also telling us what we should eat and what we shouldn't.

She told us to not eat too much junk foods like ice cream, burgers, fries, pizzas and also chicken wings all else you'll be fat and obese and not be able run and walk around.

She also talked about eating veggies, nuts, eggs and also beans to keep us healthy and active. She explained to drink more water and milk to keep our muscles nice and strong.

Adele also played games with us to find per hundred grams on a cereal card.
We also played a game when we had to find the drink bottle with the less sugars
to the most sugars
Adele also asked us to stand up to do some exercise so we won't get tired.

I really enjoyed Adele coming to our class and teaching how to healthy and not eat junk food everyday.

What is lego.

Lego is  small plastic brick toy which children of any age use to make house, cars and buildings.

Ole Kirk Christiansen invent lego in 1946. Ole Kirk Christiansen was from Billund,Denmark. He was a carpenter before he started making toys and lego. He made toys so he could make enough money for his family before christmas.

Ole Kirk Christiansen was inspired by the moulding machine and a little plastic brick. It gave him more ideas how to make the lego pieces. Ole started making teddy bears but he was still thinking about the little plastic brick, he knew there was something special about that block.

When Ole was trying to name the brick pieces he wanted the name to be short and very interesting. When he was thinking of a name a truck appears out of Ole’s window, and he saw a little sigh that said lego. But Ole didn’t know that lego in Latin ment I put together.

Ole was very proud for what he had invented and what he made. And Ole’s son was very proud as well.
